Roy Lichtenstein, Nurse

Roy Lichtenstein’s Nurse achived $95,365,000, a world record price for the Pop artist.

The Book.

Published to coincide with the sale of one of Roy Lichtenstein’s most iconic comic book depictions at Christie’s New York in November 2015, this special publication is distinctly pop. With a single original text examining Lichtenstein’s series of women as well as the works distinguished provenance, this publication places a unique emphasis on archival content. Essays by Avis Beman and Siegfried Gohr explore Lichtenstein’s comic book women, while a fully reprinted 1965 article from Life Magazine showcases the pieces distinct provenance, and the reprinted 1963 Heart Throbs comic book reveals the artist’s source imagery. Punctuated by Ken Heyman’s documentary photographs of Lichtenstein painting his archetypal nurse, this volume serves as an exclusive time capsule into the height of the Pop art movement.

“My use of evenly repeated dots and diagonal lines and uninflected color areas suggest that my work is right where it is, right on the canvas, definitely not a window into the world.”

— Roy Lichtenstein
